The Progressive People’s Party (PPP) has called on the Electoral Commission (EC) to ascertain the source of funding of political parties ahead of the elections in December fails to check how the National Democratic Congress funds its campaign, then it has failed Ghanaians.
According to the policy advisor of the PPP, Kofi Asamoah Siaw, said that it would be unfortunate if the EC fails to certify how the various parties fund their campaign for the election.
“The Electoral Commission has that responsibility to check the funding of the political parties. If you tell the EC to find out how the NDC is funding its campaign, they will tell you that they don’t know,” he said.
“That is why we say that they have reneged on their responsibility to ensure that funding that goes to an NDC campaign is purely contributions from party people and not state funds. If the EC cannot do that, then they have failed the country.”
His comments come after allegations of vote-buying by the two main parties, particularly the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) who have been accused of using state funds to buy votes.
The president donated outboard motors to fishermen in Axim when he went there as part of the campaign.
