Akufo-Addo Endorses Bawumia, Criticizes Mahama Ahead of 2024 Elections
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has expressed unwavering confidence in Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, describing him as a capable leader equipped with the skills and experience to guide Ghana to greater heights. Speaking in Kumasi to professional groups on Sunday, November 24, the President highlighted Dr. Bawumia’s qualifications and called for widespread support for his presidential bid in the upcoming 2024 elections.

Akufo-Addo emphasized Dr. Bawumia’s extensive experience in governance and a clear vision for national development, asserting that he is the right choice to build on the current administration's achievements. The President dismissed former President John Dramani Mahama’s leadership, branding him a failed leader unworthy of a second chance at the presidency. Akufo-Addo argued that Mahama’s prior tenure left Ghana in poor condition and stressed the importance of entrusting the nation’s future to fresh leadership under Dr. Bawumia.

The President underscored the critical role of the Ashanti Region in securing an electoral victory for the New Patriotic Party (NPP). Noting the region’s historical significance as the party’s stronghold, he called for unity and a strong voter turnout to ensure a decisive win in 2024. Akufo-Addo urged voters to avoid the mistakes of 2008, when the NPP lost power, and to rally behind Dr. Bawumia to secure the party’s continuity in government.

Reflecting on Ghana’s presidential history, Akufo-Addo noted that all past presidents, except for Mahama, were granted a second term. “Jerry John Rawlings had a second term, John Agyekum Kufuor had a second term, and Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo had a second term. The only one who was not given a second term was John Dramani Mahama, and the reason is that he did a poor job,” he remarked.

The President’s endorsement comes at a critical time, as Ghana approaches the 2024 general elections amidst economic and social challenges. His appeal to the electorate signals the NPP’s determination to consolidate its base and present Dr. Bawumia as the candidate capable of addressing the nation’s needs.

As the political landscape intensifies, the battle between the NPP and the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), led by Mahama, is expected to dominate the campaign season. Akufo-Addo’s firm backing of Bawumia reflects the ruling party’s strategy to rally its support base and position the Vice President as the leader for Ghana’s future.
