The outgoing Member of Parliament for Asante Akim North, Andy Appiah-Kubi, has shared the harrowing consequences he faced after spearheading the #KenMustGo campaign, which called for the resignation of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta. According to Mr. Appiah-Kubi, his involvement in this advocacy nearly cost him his life and subjected him to significant political and personal risks.
In an interview on JoyNews’ Upfront, Mr. Appiah-Kubi disclosed that his active role in the campaign, alongside 80 other New Patriotic Party (NPP) MPs, led to severe repercussions, including an alleged poisoning attempt. He revealed that his advocacy against the former Finance Minister amidst Ghana’s economic challenges made him a target, with his own party allegedly pursuing him in various ways.
"My own government had pursued me in diverse ways after our advocacy, and that is for a fact," he stated. "At some point, even my life was in danger. I suffered some ailment, got treated, and by the grace of God, I am still alive."
Mr. Appiah-Kubi recounted how his wife’s intervention likely saved his life during his hospitalization. He explained that there were attempts to transfer him from the hospital where he was being treated to Accra, a move his wife resisted based on warnings from trusted sources.
"There were attempts to lift me out of that hospital and bring me to Accra, but my wife refused the offer. At the time, I wasn't conscious enough to take care of myself, but I stayed there for seven days, and somehow, God works miraculously," he narrated.
The legislator revealed that his doctor confirmed he had been poisoned. This experience has since made him more cautious, especially about his safety and the sources of his meals. "When you attempt to attack people's integrity, it's a dangerous enterprise. So, you'd have to be careful," he warned.
Reflecting on the ordeal, Mr. Appiah-Kubi also expressed gratitude to American institutions for providing security support during this challenging period. He acknowledged the risks involved in taking a bold stance against party leadership and noted that he has since become more vigilant.
Mr. Appiah-Kubi also attributed the NPP's defeat in the 2024 elections to President Nana Akufo-Addo’s perceived intransigence, hinting at deep-seated frustrations within the party.
The MP’s revelations shed light on the personal and political challenges faced by individuals who dare to challenge the status quo within their own party, highlighting the sacrifices involved in advocating for change.
