Ghana Shippers' Authority Launches 50th Anniversary Celebrations

The Ghana Shippers' Authority (GSA) has officially launched its 50th-anniversary celebrations, commemorating five decades of dedication to the growth and transformation of Ghana's shipping and logistics industry. The event, held on Friday, November 29, 2024, at the Marriott Hotel in Accra, brought together industry leaders, policymakers, and stakeholders to reflect on the Authority's achievements and outline its vision for the future.

Under the theme “Celebrating 50 Years of Resilience; Honouring Our Legacy and Inspiring Innovative Excellence,” the anniversary highlights the GSA's pivotal role in facilitating international trade and driving economic development. The Minister for Transport, Kwaku Ofori Asiamah, delivered the keynote address, commending the Authority's contributions to Ghana’s economic growth. He particularly noted its impact on reducing shipping costs, protecting shippers’ interests, and leading significant initiatives such as the annual cocoa freight negotiations and the ongoing Boankra Inland Port project.

Mr. Asiamah also underscored the significance of the Ghana Shippers' Authority Act, 2024 (Act 1122), which provides a robust legal framework to regulate the commercial shipping sector. According to him, the new Act empowers the Authority to tackle challenges such as illegitimate charges imposed by service providers, further strengthening Ghana’s shipping industry.

The Chief Executive of GSA, Kwesi Baffour Okyere Sarpong, reflected on the Authority's resilience and innovation over the past five decades. He highlighted the modernization of operations, including the introduction of an e-platform to address non-tariff barriers and the categorization of shippers into Platinum, Gold, Silver, and Bronze tiers to offer tailored services.

“Fifty years is not just a milestone; it is a testament to our legacy and a commitment to the innovative spirit that drives us forward. Today, we stand as a transformed institution—stronger and smarter,” he said.

Among the Authority’s key achievements is the Boankra Inland Port, described as a revolutionary project for Ghana's logistics landscape. Currently 50% complete, the port is expected to integrate land, sea, and air transport systems, enhancing trade and benefiting landlocked neighboring countries.

Stella Wilson, Chairperson of the GSA Board, lauded the Authority’s commitment to governance and transparency. She attributed the GSA’s success to its ability to adapt to industry changes while staying true to its core mandate. Reflecting on past challenges, she praised the leadership’s resilience in navigating difficulties and delivering fit-for-purpose solutions.

“Our robust governance frameworks have ensured integrity in decision-making, enhancing our reputation nationally and internationally. Our vision and dedication have guided us through difficulties, enabling remarkable success,” she remarked.

Speakers at the event emphasized the importance of continuous innovation and sustainable practices within the shipping industry. The Minister called for the adoption of green shipping initiatives and the strengthening of international partnerships to ensure the GSA remains competitive on the global stage.

The GSA’s leadership echoed these aspirations. “Let this anniversary be a call to action. Let us dream bigger, aim higher, and work harder to leave a foundation that will make future generations proud,” said Mr. Okyere Sarpong.

The event served as a reminder of the Ghana Shippers’ Authority’s enduring legacy while setting the stage for a future defined by innovation, excellence, and sustainability.
