The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has pledged to prioritize the completion of stalled projects in the Ashanti Region if his party wins the upcoming elections. During a courtesy call on the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, at the Manhyia Palace, Mahama expressed his dissatisfaction with the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for failing to finish critical development projects in the region after nearly eight years in power.
In his address to the Asantehene, Mahama highlighted that many important projects initiated during his tenure as president had been left unfinished, leaving communities to suffer the consequences. He pointed out that while some projects had been completed, several key initiatives had either been abandoned or left to deteriorate. The former president singled out the Afari Military Hospital as a glaring example of the government's failure to deliver, noting that it had remained incomplete for over eight years.
“The last time I came here, I highlighted our projects in the Ashanti Region. These were crucial for the development of the area. While some were completed, others remained unfinished. Unfortunately, many of those left behind have been abandoned and are now deteriorating. For example, the Afari Military Hospital should not still be incomplete after eight years,” Mahama lamented.
He assured Otumfuo Osei Tutu II and the people of the Ashanti Region that an NDC government under his leadership would prioritize finishing these long-delayed projects, including Phase 2 of the Kejetia Market, which has been a significant infrastructural focus for the region. In addition to completing existing projects, Mahama also promised to initiate new ones to further stimulate development in the area.
Mahama’s comments reflect the NDC’s ongoing campaign to present themselves as the party of progress and accountability, with a focus on addressing the unfinished business of the current administration. The Ashanti Region, a key battleground in Ghana's elections, has seen mixed reactions to the NPP’s development promises, with many residents expressing frustration over the abandonment of projects in recent years.
In response to Mahama's remarks, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II acknowledged the former president’s concerns and encouraged him to not only remind Ghanaians of his past achievements but also clearly outline his vision for the future. The Asantehene also called for peaceful and fair elections, stressing the importance of transparency throughout the electoral process.
“We all pray for free and fair elections. The results from polling stations will determine the winners, and we must all accept the outcomes. May God guide you and grant your desires,” Otumfuo Osei Tutu II said.
As the election season intensifies, both Mahama and the NPP are vying for the support of key regions like Ashanti, where development and infrastructure are significant concerns for voters.
