Nana Akomea Defends Otto Addo, Urges Ghana Football Association to Maintain Black Stars Coach

Nana Akomea, the Vice Chairman of the New Patriotic Party's (NPP) Manifesto Committee, has urged the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to maintain Otto Addo as the coach of the Black Stars, despite calls for his dismissal following the team's failure to qualify for the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.
Speaking on the Super Morning Show on Joy FM, Nana Akomea expressed his belief that the GFA should avoid acting in haste and allow Otto Addo to continue in his role. He acknowledged the widespread dissatisfaction with the Black Stars’ performance in the AFCON qualifiers, but emphasized the importance of not succumbing to panic. "I don't think we should get into a panic mode yet. I know there are widespread calls for the coach to be relieved of his duties," Akomea said.
Despite the team's poor performance in the qualifiers, where Ghana finished at the bottom of Group F with just three points and failed to win any of their six matches, Nana Akomea insisted that sacking the coach would not be a productive move. "Listen, we have the World Cup qualification ahead of us. I believe we should maintain the coach to take us through the qualification series," he added.
Otto Addo, who signed a 34-month contract to lead the Black Stars earlier this year, has overseen Ghana's worst-ever AFCON qualification campaign. The team's failure to qualify for next year's AFCON has left many fans and pundits questioning his ability to guide the national team to success. However, Nana Akomea, a senior figure in the governing NPP, argued that frequent changes in coaching staff have not benefitted Ghana in the past. "Any sign of trouble, we change the coach to bring in another coach, and then we get into trouble again," he remarked.
Akomea further suggested that the GFA should give Otto Addo the opportunity to lead the team through the upcoming World Cup qualification series before making any final decisions. "So I believe we should maintain the coach to lead us into the qualifiers. If that one too, we end the cycle without qualification, then we can take a decision," he stated, reinforcing his position that Otto Addo's tenure should not end prematurely.
Meanwhile, the GFA is expected to make a decision on Otto Addo's future on November 27, 2024, following a review meeting on Wednesday. The Executive Council of the GFA could not reach a consensus on whether or not to relieve the coach of his duties, leaving the matter unresolved. In the same meeting, the GFA also announced the dissolution of the Black Stars management committee, a move that has further fueled speculation regarding the coach's future.
As the GFA prepares to make its decision, the debate over Otto Addo's tenure is expected to continue, with divided opinions within the football community. Some fans and analysts have called for a change in leadership, while others believe that continuity and stability are necessary for the Black Stars to have a successful future, particularly in the World Cup qualifiers.
