National Peace Council Calls for Peace and Tolerance Ahead of Final Campaign Rallies

As Ghana’s presidential election approaches, the National Peace Council (NPC) is calling on Ghanaians to uphold peace and tolerance, especially as the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) prepare for their final campaign rallies tomorrow, December 5, in Accra. These rallies, set to take place near Legon and Madina, come just two days before the election on Saturday, December 7.
In a statement issued today, the NPC reminded Ghanaians of the Peace Pact signed last week by all 12 presidential candidates, including Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the NPP and John Mahama of the NDC. The pact serves as a commitment by the candidates to foster peace and stability throughout the election period. By signing the agreement, the candidates pledged to respect the democratic process and promote peaceful behavior among their supporters.
The NPC has also launched a video aimed at promoting peace and unity during the final stretch of the campaign season. In the video, Fouzia, an Assistant Programmes Manager at the NPC, delivers a powerful message encouraging political supporters to respect differing opinions. “Elections will come and go, but we remain here as a people,” she says in the video. “Someone’s opinion or ideology does not make another’s wrong. Let’s respect and be tolerant.”
As the campaign period draws to a close, the NPC is urging all political parties and their supporters to follow the law and maintain order during their rallies. The council stressed that it is essential for everyone to exercise restraint and avoid any actions that could lead to violence or instability in the lead-up to the election.
Furthermore, the NPC has called on security agencies to ensure professionalism and to provide adequate protection for citizens throughout the rallies and election day. Security forces are expected to maintain a neutral stance, focusing on safeguarding the public while allowing for the peaceful conduct of political events.
The NPC emphasized that peaceful elections are crucial for Ghana’s democracy and long-term stability. By ensuring a smooth electoral process, the country can continue to serve as a beacon of democratic progress in the region.
In light of these calls for peace, the NPC has reiterated that the integrity of the upcoming election relies on the collective responsibility of all Ghanaians to respect one another, uphold democratic values, and work towards a peaceful outcome on election day.
