President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has expressed bewilderment over former President John Dramani Mahama’s decision to seek a return to the presidency. Speaking at a durbar hosted by the Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Council in Kyebi during his "Thank You Tour" of the Eastern Region, President Akufo-Addo highlighted Mahama’s unique record of being the only Ghanaian president under the Fourth Republic to have been rejected by voters twice after serving one term.
“All leaders under the Fourth Republic have had the opportunity to serve two terms, except for the late J.E.A. Mills, who passed away. John Dramani Mahama is the only president in this period who has been rejected twice after his first term,” President Akufo-Addo remarked.
He questioned Mahama’s credibility, suggesting that the former president’s policies lack direction and consistency. Akufo-Addo particularly criticized Mahama’s opposition to key initiatives like Free Senior High School (SHS), Agenda 111, and the One District, One Factory (1D1F) project, warning that these programs would be jeopardized if Mahama were to return to power.
"Mahama has no clear policy. He claims he will 'reset' Ghana – but is ‘reset’ really a policy? He talks about a 24-hour economy, but when asked for details, he says it’s voluntary. You couldn’t keep the lights on for 24 hours, so how can you implement a 24-hour economy?" the president questioned.
Calling on Ghanaians to support Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in the upcoming elections, Akufo-Addo argued that Dr. Bawumia is best positioned to continue the social intervention programs initiated by his administration.
"On Saturday, I urge you to vote overwhelmingly for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to protect and continue all the developmental projects I have started," he said, emphasizing the importance of sustaining progress.
Addressing accusations of religious favoritism in the electoral process, President Akufo-Addo reminded Ghanaians that their rights and privileges remain the same regardless of religious differences.
The Okyenhene, Osagyefuo Amoatia Ofori Panin, also commended President Akufo-Addo’s leadership, particularly praising the Free SHS policy as a monumental achievement. According to the Okyenhene, such visionary decisions will positively shape Ghana’s future and leave a lasting legacy for generations to come.
