Kumasi-based radio and television presenter Oheneba Nana Asiedu has been granted bail by the Ghana Police Service after his arrest on Saturday, November 23, 2024. The arrest followed allegations that he had published false news, which raised concerns regarding the upcoming December general elections.
Asiedu was invited by the Ashanti Regional Police Command on Friday, November 22, 2024, for questioning in connection to a statement he had made on air. The statement, which spread rapidly across social media, suggested that voters should cast their ballots for presidential candidates on separate days during the December 7 elections. This claim, however, contradicted established electoral rules, which stipulate that all voting activities, including casting ballots for the presidency, must occur on the same day.
The Ghana Police Service quickly described the information as “false and likely to disturb the public peace.” According to the police, the misinformation had the potential to create confusion among voters, which could ultimately undermine the integrity of the electoral process. This misleading information, if unchecked, might have led to significant disruptions, leaving voters uncertain about the procedures for voting.
The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) also condemned the false statement, emphasizing the importance of ensuring that the public receives accurate information, particularly during election periods. They urged the public to rely on official sources, such as the Electoral Commission and other authorized bodies, to ensure they are properly informed about electoral guidelines and procedures.
The police have reiterated their commitment to ensuring a peaceful and smooth election process, cautioning all media personnel, including presenters and journalists, to avoid spreading unverified information. The police have made it clear that any deliberate attempts to mislead the public will be dealt with firmly to maintain public order and stability, especially in the lead-up to the general elections.
Meanwhile, investigations into the matter are ongoing. Authorities are focusing on determining the intent behind the presenter’s statement and the potential consequences of his actions on the electoral process. Asiedu, who was granted bail, is expected to report to the police periodically as part of the conditions of his release. The police have made it clear that such matters will be treated with the utmost seriousness to safeguard the electoral system's integrity.
