President Akufo-Addo Commissions 97-Kilometer Tema-Mpakadan Railway Line, A Milestone for Ghana’s Transportation

President Akufo-Addo has officially commissioned the 97-kilometer Tema-Mpakadan railway line, a transformative infrastructure project marking a new chapter in Ghana’s transportation sector. The commissioning ceremony, held at the Tema Harbour on November 22, 2024, ushered in the opening of Ghana’s first standard gauge railway, constructed at a cost of $447 million, funded through a credit facility from India-Exim Bank.

In his address at the event, President Akufo-Addo highlighted the railway’s significance in addressing long-standing challenges within Ghana’s transportation sector. He described the inauguration of this railway line as a historic achievement, emphasizing its importance in the country’s continued modernization. "This historic achievement, the first-ever standard gauge railway line in Ghana, symbolizes the bold strides we’re making to modernize our transport infrastructure and drive the economic growth of our nation," the President declared.

The new railway is a key component of Ghana’s first multimodal transport system, which aims to integrate rail, road, and inland water transport to connect the Tema Port with Buipe Port via the Volta Lake. The President emphasized that this infrastructure development will play a pivotal role in reducing the country’s over-reliance on road transport for long-distance freight and passenger movement. "This railway line will address several critical challenges that have hindered Ghana's development. It will decongest significantly our roads, alleviating the health burden that has led to severe traffic congestion, the rapid deterioration of road infrastructure, and an alarming increase in road accidents," President Akufo-Addo noted.

Describing the railway as a "lifeline" for communities and businesses, President Akufo-Addo explained that it would significantly lower transportation costs, improve agricultural trade, and enhance port operations. "The economic and social benefits of this project are far-reaching and transformative," he said. "By alleviating the pressure on our road network, we will extend the lifeline of critical routes, including those along the eastern corridor, while simultaneously lowering the cost of transporting bulk goods, agricultural produce, and containers, thereby enhancing business competitiveness."

The President further stated that the railway would offer a reliable and cost-effective transportation alternative for passengers, particularly in areas currently underserved by road networks. The project is expected to facilitate the seamless movement of goods such as fuel, cement, and agricultural produce while boosting the competitiveness of the port by minimizing vessel waiting times and improving cargo handling efficiency.

Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to expanding Ghana’s railway network, President Akufo-Addo mentioned the revised 2020 Railway Master Plan, which will guide the ongoing expansion. "The Tema-Mpakadan Railway Line is just one piece of a larger puzzle. Guided by our 2020 revised Railway Master Plan, we’ll continue to expand the reach of Ghana’s railway network to unlock the full potential of our economy. This is a vision that will require sustained investment, partnerships, and unwavering national wealth."

The President extended gratitude to the Indian government for its financial support, as well as to local chiefs and community members for their cooperation during the construction of the railway. "I extend my deepest gratitude to the chiefs and people of the communities affected by this project. Your patience, cooperation, and sacrifices have been invaluable," he stated.

He concluded by stressing the importance of collective responsibility in maintaining the railway, emphasizing that it is a national asset that will empower communities, invigorate businesses, and strengthen industries. "As I commission this landmark project today, I’m filled with hope for the brighter future that lies ahead for our country. Together, let us continue to build an efficient, interconnected, and prosperous Ghana," President Akufo-Addo urged.
